DMD was initially created in 1975, for the purpose of administrating the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) program for the City of Evansville. In the ensuing years, the duties of the Department have been expanded to include a broader range of responsibilities. While the administration of the CDBG program is still a major function of Metropolitan Development, its scope has expanded into the operation of a number of programs utilizing resources that relate to community and economic development.

To encourage, stimulate and participate in community development, economic development, neighborhood stabilization and neighborhood revitalization in the City of Evansville.

Administers the Community Development Block Grant, Emergency Shelter Grant, HOME Investment Partnership and other various federal and state grants which benefit low to moderate income people; initiates activities to strengthen, revitalize and stabilize the City's targeted neighborhoods; coordinates economic development activities, including business recruitment, expansion and retention.

Provides staff support assisting the Evansville Redevelopment Commission in the coordination and execution of redevelopment or economic development activities. See this link for active CITY districts:

Historic Preservation Service
Provides services to develop and expand preservation activities through public awareness and education; conducts Section 106 reviews and National Register nominations.
